One of These Days
02:31
|
|||
One of these days I'm going to get out of the South.
I'm going to pack up my shit, and burn down this house.
And on the way out of dodge, yeah, I'll be all grins and laughs.
I don't know where I'm going, but I ain't ever coming back.
And I'm just going to drive, 'til I run out of road
To the ends of the earth, find a new place I can go.
One of these days can't come soon enough.
Man, I ain't getting any younger, and my life kind of sucks.
All I ever wanted was a seat at the table of rock 'n roll
If Robert Pollard taught me anything, it's that I'm an incurable.
And these voices are gonna guide me, 'til I run out of road.
To the ends of the earth, find a new place I can go.

Are You Still There?
02:37
|
|||
So we sat through the thunder and the rain.
Yeah, we waited, but you never came.
And I need you more than I ever did in the past.
So we're even now I guess.
And I'm ready for whatever comes next.
And we're leaving all this behind, are you still there?
Turn on the lights, let's bang heads.
You show me the ropes, I'll show you what gives.
Put in some time with this old kid.
So we passed through the doorway out into the terrain.
Yeah we searched but it just all looked the same.
So today I'm heading home, are you still there?
I'm real eager to sit down and watch...
...the sequel and whoever it stars
I've been waiting all of my life, are you still there?
Turn on the lights, let's bang heads.
You show me the ropes, I'll show you what gives.
Put in some time with this old kid.

Your Next Move
03:16
|
|||
You better think long and hard about your next move
No one's remembered for anything other than the shape they left the room
And out on the open road, you can sing those songs
People may sing along, you can live your life in a photograph on the wall
But can they sing harmonies? What then when the picture fades?
No one is ever remembered for anything other than the last thing that they did
And out on the open road, you may not last long,
When the floor begins to shake, will you resist or give way to oblivion?
It's hard to understand but you can feel it in your stomach
The world sure has its way of giving you things you never wanted.
You're hungry for control, man, don't you ever listen?
Ain't it funny how a foxhole will drive a man to superstition?
You better think long and hard what you want to do,
There's going to come a time when you'll realize there's not much left of you.
And out on the open road, you may be alone...
when the floor begins to shake, will you resist or give way to oblivion?
It's hard to understand but you can feel it in your stomach
The world sure has its way of giving you things you never wanted.
You're hungry for control, man, don't you ever listen?
Ain't it funny how a foxhole will drive a man to superstition?
Because his story's already been told
It's hard to understand but you can feel it in your stomach
The world sure has its way of giving you things you never wanted.
You're hungry for control, man, don't you ever listen?
Ain't it funny how a foxhole will drive a man to superstition?

What the Hell?
04:33
|
|||
Well things have been a little rough 'round here of late and I
never felt so much unlike myself, what the hell?
It seems to be some kind of circular thing, cuz I
always end up right back in the exact same situation
crippling fear and isolation.
I've been keeping a list of my favorite little sayings that
punctuate the walls inside those rooms, how do you do?
See, I've been told thousands of times, and you can tell me a thousand more
if you want, it couldn't hurt.
But I can't ever promise anybody anything,
babe, you know that I was born to lose.
I don't see the point in dragging you through it all
when one of these days that bill is coming due...it's coming.
The fever breaks after a couple of months,
and i turn back into myself, what the hell?
It seems to be some kind of circular thing, cuz I
always end up right back at the exact same destination
before the train even leaves the station
But I can't ever promise anybody anything,
babe, you know that I was born to lose.
I don't see the point in dragging you through it all
when one of these days that bill is coming due..

Whistlepig
02:43
|

Snakes in the grass cover your feet
How did this happen, and what does it mean?
You try kick kick kicking, but it's no use
You try shake shake shaking but you can't get loose
Just something else to weigh you down
Something else to carry 'round
You gotta be calculated, you gotta be cool
You gotta be willing to bend the rules
So clench your teeth, hold on tight
And hope you don't end up stuck in the mirror
Nothing makes sense, you better get used to it
Because things are only gonna get weirder
Rats in the walls, cover your mouth
I wonder how long they've been listening
Who can you trust? Nobody knows
You try love love loving, but it does no good
Something else to weigh you down
Something else to carry 'round
You gotta be practical, you gotta be cool
You gotta be ready when it's time to move
And clench your teeth, hold on tight
And hope you don't end up stuck in the mirror
Nothing makes sense, you better get used to it
Because things are only gonna get weirder
Bugs in the kitchen putting on a parade
How did this happen and what does it mean?
You try stomp stomp stomping but it's no good
They've already taken over the neighborhood
Who can you trust? Nobody told ya
You try love love loving but it does no good
You gotta rational, you gotta be cool
You gotta be willing to bend the rules
And clench your teeth, hold on tight
And hope you don't end up stuck in the mirror
Nothing makes sense, you better get used to it
Because things are only gonna get weirder

Jenny
02:24
|

Jenny, baby, you did it.
There wasn't anything for me to do but sit there.
You're a spark plug, a go-getter,
At the top of your game.
You're world class, there's none better...
Oh Jenny, yeah, I'm ready.
If that's why you called me over let's see what you can do dear.
And if my heart skips a beat, don't panic.
Sometimes it runs me over and kills me but whatever.
Oh Jenny, yeah, we're in it.
If we can't get into focus, let's just linger in the mirror.
And if the glass breaks, don't sweat it.
We won't get old or lonely if you just do this to me forever.
Jenny, baby, let's turn it over.
If you keep that engine humming
There'll be no way for us
To lose.
Jenny, baby, let's turn it over.
If you keep that engine humming
There'll be no way for us
To lose.
Jenny, baby, you did it.
You've got me wrapped around your pretty little finger.
You're a siren, you're black magic
Pull under your curse cmon baby let me have it
Oh Jenny, yeah, I'm ready.
Let's just keep this thing going and see what we can do dear.
And if my heart skips a beat, don't panic.
Sometimes it runs me over and kills me but whatever.

Calmer Waters
03:47
|
|||
It's gonna come through and rumble your kitchen
You're gonna have to find space on the floor
The whole damn lot's talking out each other's mouths
They're whispering softly but you can't make it out.
Let's set sail for calmer waters - the only ride I know
See cuz we're too good for the "yeah, whatever"
Time we say so
These days I wonder what's happening now
With everything twisting and flipping around
When your whole damn life's just like a cut from the night
You weather it slowly but come out alright
Let's set sail for calmer waters - the only ride I know
See cuz we're too good for the "yeah, whatever"
Time we say so
The wet grass felt pretty good between my toes
She said, "take it or leave it" with an insufferable tone in her voice
And yeah the sunlight reflecting off my feet
Kind of made me feel like I had time.
Made me feel like I had time.
Yeah well let's set sail for calmer waters - it's the only ride i know
See cuz we're too good for the "yeah, whatever"
Time we say so

Tell Me the Truth
02:53
|
|||
She said "just tell me the truth."
I said "I don't know how."
She said, "then just write a song"
That's what I'm doing right now.
It goes bap-ba-da-da-dap, around it do.
But mostly it's just pretty fucking funny how I pretend I'm holding it together.
But I guess it's second nature now, see I've been doing it forever.
She said "you're doing it again"
I said "girl, what you mean?"
She said "you're driving me crazy. And I don't want to bop-bop-ba-dap-dap around with you."
And then she told me that
it's pretty fucking funny
how I pretend
I'm holding it together.
But I guess the joke's on her.
She should have known better.
You come to one day and see where you are...
Where all your friends and lovers have gone...
You don't have a dog in the fight.
But one of these days, you'll get right.
She said "just tell me the truth."
I said "I don't know how."
She said, "then just write a song"
That's what I'm doing right now.
It goes bap-ba-da-da-dap, around it do.
But mostly it's just pretty fucking funny how I pretend I'm holding it together.
But I guess the joke's on me, I should have done better.
You come to one day and see where you are...
Where all your friends and lovers have gone...
You don't have a dog in the fight.
But one of these days, you'll get right.

Vera
03:14
|
|||
They're changing out your shoelaces,
You're flying down the shoot again
Living out your life
As someone else's mannequin.
Standing in the window,
Waving but it's just pretend.
When the lights go out
They throw you in the recycling
Vera oh darling. What's happening?
I see you yelling and screaming, but no one's listening.
Vera oh honey, all the time you must spend
Yelling and screaming, but no one's listening
Now you got a new head,
With fresh paint and a slimmer chin
Living out your life
As someone else's mannequin
Standing in the window,
Sporting your new cardigan
When the lights go out
They throw you in the trash can
Vera oh darling. What's happening?
You're yelling and screaming, but no one's listening.
Vera oh honey, all the time you must spend
Yelling and screaming, but no one's listening
They're changing out your shoelaces,
You're flying down the shoot again
Living out your life
As someone else's mannequin.
Standing in the window,
Waving but it's just pretend.
When the lights go out
They throw you in the trash can
Vera oh darling. What's happening?
I see you yelling and screaming, but no one's listening.

Down & Out
02:22
|
|||
Well I'm all wound up
Here we go
Don't you know,
I love a good crash and burn
Who's to say what that's about,
I just know
I want to do it again
I want to feel like a good time baby but
Goddamn I just feel so down and out
Well I'm sticking around baby girl
Don't you know, we're gonna give it a shot
But I'd throw it all away just to live one more day
Like it's the last that I got.
I want to feel like a sunrise darling, but
Goddamn I just feel so down and out
Well we're making the best of our weird situation
Things are going to be fine
But if it doesn't work out baby girl
Then we'll both just move on with our lives
I want to feel like a good time baby
And live my life in the sunshine darling
It'd be nice to know if I mattered to someone
Because goddamn I just feel so down and out

Nothing Really Matters
02:00
|
|||
The years keep changing and nothing really matters.
We're all nihilists now and we all got hepatis.
And we're making the rounds.
We're coming into your town.
And we're gonna build a new health food store.
I don't know how I can help you understand.
She stuck a fork in daddy's shoulder,
and we did the rest.
You want to come here, I can show you on my phone.
It says we're damaged, but that's just life.
Besides, it's hard to know what is even real.
We're invisible, which only goes to show.
No one gives a damn what you feel.
These days are draining and nothing really matters.
We're all royalty now and we all got diabetes
And we're standing our ground.
We're huddled up in a crouch.
To ward off the invasion of punk ass DJs
I don't know how I can help you understand.
We stuck a fork into the ground and waited 10,000 years.
You want to come here, we can listen on the radio.
It says we're damaged, but that's just life.
Besides, it's hard to know what is even real.
We're invisible, which only goes to show.
No one gives a damn what you feel.
The years keep changing and nothing really matters.
We're in recovery now, a bunch of washed up alcoholics.
And we're grinding it out.
We're throwing pills in our mouths.
To ward off the invasion of long lost weekends.
I don't know how I can help you understand.
We'd do it over and over and over again.
You want to come here, I can show you on my phone.
It says we're damaged, but that's just life.
Besides, it's hard to know what is even real.
We're invisible, which only goes to show.
No one gives a damn what you feel.

A Baptist & a Rabbi
04:00
|
|||
We'd all come together due to a series of misfortunate,
There was a baptist and a rabbi,
We had a marxist and an orphan
And we got trashed.
It took 40 days and nights to pass.
So we set out to uncover
Some sort of cosmic explanation,
For the pain of our existence,
And mortal limitations.
Some kind of map
That's gonna lead us to salvation at last.
She's dancing under bright lights.
I'm worried about her insides.
Night starts to fade into the morning,
We take some pills and talk it over.
Ya know, I'm saving up for a fresh start
And a new heart, and an American girl.
I
Want to see the sun rise.
Some folks go walking on the water,
We just sink down and get washed over.
There's never been a worse time
To climb out from under your rock
I'm sorry baby if I spoiled the party,
You know how I can come undone.
And the scars on my face
Tell my tell of disgrace
We both know I'm no good on my own.
Because I'm not much
Of a man,
But by now
I'm due for a win.
Yeah you know
What they say,
Even a broken clock's right twice a day.
Well I know what you think and
I don't give a damn
I've learned a few tricks of my own.
Yeah you came all this way,
What the hell'd you expect?
Well it all worked out in the end.
